Course overview
The "Routes into Employment" program, formerly known as "Skills for Life and Work," is a comprehensive 36-week course divided into two phases, each lasting 18 weeks and aligned with SCQF Level 4.
It aims to prepare students for the workforce through a combination of college-organised work placements and classroom learning.
Phase 1 focuses on introducing students to essential employment skills, including customer service, digital safety, and practical skills for employment, complemented by a minimum of 20 hours of work placement.
Phase 2 involves a longer work placement experience of 40 hours, encompassing additional qualifications in first aid, communication, and numeracy skills, as well as industry exploration through site visits and employer talks. This program is designed to help students transition smoothly from school to employment or further vocational training.

Placement information
- An intensive college-organised supported work placement.
- The opportunity to gain a first aid qualification, communication and presentation skills and numeracy skills for employment.
- Students will have the opportunity to explore various industries through site visits and talks by industry professionals.
- At the end of phase two, students may look to complete a formal vocational award in their chosen industry (at college) or continue directly into employment.
Number of days per week
- Work Placement: Minimum 40 hours over the semester
- College Days: Tuesday, Thursday (Placement), Friday (TBC)
Entry requirements
- Demonstrate an ability to work at SCQF level 4.
- Completing phase one of the programme would be advantageous but not compulsory.

- Pursue a Formal Vocational Award: Enrol in a vocational programme in their chosen industry at college.
- Enter Employment: Use the enhanced skills and experience to secure a job in their desired field.
These progression routes are designed to provide students with flexible options to either continue their education or transition smoothly into the workforce, depending on their individual goals and preferences.
