Course overview

We run two HNCs in Television at the College: HNC Television and Film and HNC Television with Multicamera Operations. Both cover a similar range of knowledge and skills and will equip you for a future in Television. Each has a slightly different focus.

If you are interested in single-camera location shooting for both scripted and unscripted productions and, if you are interested in film and TV. So, if you want the knowledge and skills to work on drama or documentaries for television, streaming networks, or film, this is the one to pick.

The course features a mixture of classroom teaching, working with equipment in studios and location shooting. You will be expected to analyse, write and speak about different types of productions. You will also need to work in groups with other students on practical tasks. You must be ready to operate the camera, sound and lighting equipment and post-production software, and to carry out research, complete production documentation, write scripts and present your work to others.

Over the year you will make two factual and two non-factual short productions, for which you will:

  • Research and develop content in response to given briefs
  • Pitch project proposals
  • Write scripts
  • Carry out pre-production activities
  • Prepare production documentation
  • Direct others
  • Edit and do additional post-production work as required, such as colour correction, audio post-production, adding motion graphics, working with composers, etc.

You will also:

  • Work under other students’ direction on their productions

  • Write and present analyses of television productions
  • Screen and discuss your work
