Performing Arts Students Thrill During Taking Flight Festival 2021
Edinburgh College Performing Arts students thrilled a virtual audience with performances created as part of their course for a festival that aims to showcase creative talent across Edinburgh.
The BA Dance and Drama students created their own routines and performed them as part of the week-long Taking Flight Festival 2021, which was premiered on YouTube at the end of April.
The performances were created as part of the Dance Making 3: Creation and Collaboration unit on the BA course, which explores creative collaborative performances or creative outcomes and challenges students to put together their own unique routines.
Over 250 people tuned in to watch the festival premiere during the week and there have been more than 2,000 views across each of the videos since the festival took place.
BA Dance and Drama student Evangeline Hoggan said: “I was extremely happy with how my performance went during the Taking Flight Showcase. I received lovely messages from people who watched it who said that they really connected to the emotion throughout my piece and could feel the love between the characters which was amazing to hear.
“I was drawn to the idea of long-distance relationships mainly because I am currently in one due to the pandemic and many close friends are in similar situations. It was rather nerve-wracking showcasing a piece of work publicly that is based on a topic I have personal experience with, but it has meant a lot to be able to work with other talented artists who have been through similar experiences and allow their stories to be told.”
Rosalind Hoyte said: “Taking Flight has been an engaging exploration into the choreographic and collaborative talents of our students. In the face of adversity and a year of challenges and changes they have produced high quality work that we are very proud of. Industry professionals, companies and friends have joined their journey in their daily showcases, allowing for a live premier of each students work. True professionals who will be an asset to the industry in whatever they do next. A very successful celebration of what we do and who we are at PASS.”
