Course overview

This two-year course (for applicants at SCQF Level 6 or equivalent) will enable you to learn the art of audio-visual media production, live events broadcasting, and livestreaming through a course built around practical experience in:

  • Video camera operation
  • Vision mixing
  • Sound mixing
  • Lighting
  • Video editing and compositing graphics 

This programme, based at our Sighthill campus, is designed for those who want to learn by doing, with a focus on practical activities in which you will film and transmit live events and projects aligned with real-world industry practice. In particular, this course focuses on teaching the technical skills needed to boost your employability, such as pursuing a career in Television (TV).

Whether you want to work in live television (TV), livestreaming, sports media, live music coverage, film/filmmaking, or other aspects of digital media, this course will equip you with the technical expertise, creative skills, and problem-solving abilities to succeed in high-pressure broadcast and streaming environments.

You'll work with professional-grade equipment, produce live content, and gain direct experience in a fast-paced, exciting world of live events.

Students joining us should have achieved a relevant SCQF Level 6 qualification or equivalent. The qualification you will be awarded after two years will be called "HND Audio Visual Technology".

How the course is assessed

  • This is a project-based curriculum, where you will predominantly be assessed on your performance across a variety of project work.
  • You will be assessed through both practical and written assignments.

Number of days per week

  • You will primarily be taught on 3 regularly scheduled days per week.
  • You may occasionally be asked to participate in filming projects on evenings and/or weekends, depending on the variable nature of the projects.

Entry requirements

  • A minimum of two Highers at C or above (preferably in English, a Science or Mathematics), or successful completion of a relevant NC qualification at SCQF Level 6, or a relevant UAL Level 3 qualification, or equivalent.

Information on Tests / Auditions / Interview Requirements

  • You will be asked to an interview to assess your suitability for the course.
  • Interviews will take place at the Sighthill campus. In some situations, we may allow interviews to take place online via MS Teams.
  • We may also ask students to provide examples of their previous creative work in a portfolio.
