Alberto Takes the First Steps to Becoming a Teacher in Scotland

Forty-three-year-old Alberto Vazquez chose Edinburgh College to help him learn English for Work and Training after hearing his friends speak highly of the teaching staff and their professionalism.

Now Alberto has completed his course and leaves having received the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Student of the Year Award as part of Prize Giving 2020.

Alberto talks about winning the award, and his College experience here.

“This is a very pleasant surprise to me. I believe I owe my success to my teachers as without them my progress would not happen.

Before starting at Edinburgh College, I lived in Spain, where I am from, but I decided that I wanted to learn English as a language and decided to come to Scotland to do it.

I didn’t speak any English when I arrived here but I have learned and progressed quickly with the help of my teacher and classmates. They have been always very friendly and respectful.

The quality of the teaching and the interaction with people from other cultures and countries have been the highlights. I am most proud of becoming more open minded and understanding of different beliefs, traditions and social customs of other cultures.

And now, I am very happy with my progression and the only thing I would have done differently was arriving in the country and enrolling in the course much earlier.

Looking ahead, I would like to become fluent and accurate because I am interested in being a teacher in Scotland.

I would describe my Edinburgh College experience as challenging, rewarding and exciting.”
