Mohamad Takes First Step Towards Becoming a Mechanical Engineer
Twenty-year-old Mohamad Alkawekji moved to Scotland from Syria two years ago and hopes to fulfil his dream of becoming a Mechanical Engineer. The first step on his journey was to learn English, which he has completed at Edinburgh College.
Mohamad has been named an ESOL Student of the Year at this year’s Prize Giving. Mohamad talks to us about this College experience.
How do you feel about being recognised at Prize Giving?
As a Syrian refugee, I’m so happy to hear that I’m a prize winner for this year because I didn’t study for many years before I came to the UK.
What made you choose Edinburgh College for your studies?
I studied for one year at Tynecastle High School and my teacher there told me about Edinburgh College is one of the best colleges in Scotland.
Have you faced any challenges, either before starting or during your studies? How did you overcome them?
I didn’t speak any English before I came to Edinburgh and it was really hard for me to communicate with people, but since I have started studying in Edinburgh college my English has got better.
What are your plans for the future? Are you going on to further study after college or into employment? What is your end goal?
I’ll continue studying and I hope that I become a Mechanical Engineer in the future.
What are you most proud of that you have achieved while studying at Edinburgh College?
I’m proud of the certificate that I have achieved in ESOL Pre-intermediate A.
