Change Of Career and Change of Continent for Carlos

At 33 years old, many people might only consider coming to college for upskilling in their current role or to get their boss’ off their back by doing some continuing professional development. However, anyone can come to college at any time – whether the purpose is to further develop existing skills, or take a whole new direction in their career – our recent graduate Carlos Herrera Morillo’s story proves it.

Carlos graduated from the College with a HND in Hospitality Management and is now on his way to achieving an International Hospitality and Tourism Management degree from Edinburgh Napier University. Prior to that, Carlos was living in Melbourne, Australia, working as a brand ambassador for global fashion and beauty companies Estee Lauder and Tom Ford, where he was responsible for the organisation of events across the country. We caught up with Carlos about his experience at Edinburgh College and how it has helped him to get closer to his dream of working in the thriving Hospitality industry.

What made you choose Edinburgh College for your studies?

My best friend has been living in Edinburgh for a number of years. Before I moved here, she often recommended the College to me as she was doing a similar course. The programme she forwarded to me seemed very interesting. It has certainly fulfilled my needs in order to progress to where I want to be.

What has been the best thing about studying at Edinburgh College? Any highlights?

The fact that faculty members are there to support you. My main motivator throughout the two years at College was my tutor Sarah MacLeod-Bonnar. Her academic knowledge on her subjects, enthusiasm and effortless ability to transfer her subjects to the students inspired me to further my career in Hospitality even more.

What are you most proud of that you have achieved while studying at Edinburgh College?

Achieving straight As in both of my graded units so I could get into university.

What is your end goal?

I am currently doing year three in International Hospitality and Tourism Management at Edinburgh Napier University. For the second trimester of the course, I’ll be flying to Mexico where I will be doing a placement at the resort ‘Gran Flamenco Xcaret’ in Riviera Maya. I will base my portfolio (last assessment to complete my BA) in that resort. I will have to work for them for six months in order to meet the University’s requirements to complete my portfolio.

Describe your Edinburgh College experience in three words.

Fun. Life-changing. Unforgettable.
