Hospitality Student Peter Finds Path to New Opportunities

Twenty-one-year-old Peter, originally from New York, moved to Scotland eight years ago. He told us how studying HND Hospitality Management has shown him a path to new opportunities.

“Before coming to College, I worked at Five Guys where I would work for 10 or 11 hour shifts at a time. I loved the fast-paced environment of the restaurant and working as part of a larger team, but other than that I didn’t have much drive or direction and didn’t really know what I wanted to do long-term.

I needed a new challenge, and felt that coming to college would give me the qualifications and experience needed to help further my career options. I attended the College’s clearing event at Granton Campus and decided that, having always worked around the hospitality industry, the HND Hospitality Management course would be perfect for me.

In the second year of my course, I applied to take part in the HIT Scotland scholarship programme in Lausanne, Switzerland. The programme exists to provide learning experiences to students, giving them the chance to study at some of the world’s finest hospitality schools I was shocked to receive an email from one of my lecturers informing me that I’d been chosen out of the numerous people who applied. Achieving this was a great feeling and was evidence to me of the growth and progress I’ve made throughout my time studying at the College. In Lausanne, I will be studying customer service for one week, alongside students selected from colleges and universities across the country, at EHL (Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne) – one of the most prestigious hospitality schools in the world.

My plan for after College is to go on to university to study Hospitality with Spanish, before getting some more experience working in the industry. I would highly recommend studying at Edinburgh College, especially to people who are currently working but fancy a career change, as coming here has given me goals to work towards and shown me a path to further opportunities.”
