Automotive Students Qualify to National Skills Qualifiers

Eight Edinburgh College Automotive Engineering students have qualified for a national skills qualifier which could lead to them competing at WorldSkills UK Live.

Callum Brown, Cameron Orr, Craig Wallace, James Kennedy-Pratt, James Penney, Murray Inglis, Russell Bonnar, and Thomas Hepburn have all qualified for IMI’s 2020 Skills Competition in the Light Vehicle Technology category.

The students, who qualified through different entry routes – national aptitude tests or regional qualifying competitions – will now all compete against peers from colleges and training academies from across the UK – on a date yet to be confirmed.

At the competition, the students will be set challenges designed to test their skills across areas including vehicle inspection, engine mechanical, transmission, braking systems and body electrical.

Automotive curriculum leader Sandy Bruce said: “Congratulations to our students for qualifying for this regional heat – it’s a terrific achievement. Skills competitions like these are a fantastic way for students to challenge themselves in a different environment working under a different sort of pressure, and for them to meet like-minded students from across the country. We wish them all the best and hope that the competition can be hosted soon.”

The top performing students at the national skills competition qualifiers then go on to WorldSkills UK Live, held annually in Birmingham.
