Mum of Six Styles Her Way to New Career at Edinburgh College
Thirty-eight-year-old Lisa Black came to Edinburgh College to give herself and her children a better future. Now she graduates with a HNC in Hairdressing, and takes with her multiple competition medals, and, most importantly a new whole new lease of life.
Before coming to the College’s Milton Road Campus, Haddington resident Lisa worked in various part-time roles in order to provide her children with everything they needed. But, not wanting to give up her dreams, Lisa enrolled at Edinburgh College – changing her life in the process.
During her time studying Hairdressing, Lisa was encouraged by her lecturer, Marion Main, to enter into national competitions to showcase her growing skillset, an environment in which she thrived.
Lisa qualified for the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) national finals held in Blackpool after winning silver and bronze medals in a regional heat held at the College’s Granton Campus. Lisa claimed fourth spot in the UK finals in the Ladies Cut and Blow Dry category. In addition, Lisa competed in a WorldSkills UK regional heat where she finished in third place.
She said: “I have loved every minute, it has been an excellent experience which has totally changed my life. I’ve met new people and friends, and learned new things which has all helped me become who I am today.”
Looking to the future, Lisa plans to continue studying so that she can become a Hairdressing lecturer to allow her to inspire others the way she has been inspired by her tutors at the College.
