Returning to Education Gave Peter Their Confidence Back
Twenty-seven-year old Peter tells us how returning to education to study Access to Sports Therapy and Fitness gave him his confidence back.
“After finishing school I went straight into employment. I worked in a Whisky shop for six years and found myself in a bad place as I wasn’t feeling motivated or challenged in my work. I turned to exercise as a way to feel better and get more active.
I decided to hand in my notice at the Whisky shop to look for a new challenge. Whilst searching for a new job, I decided it was time to invest in myself and to return to studying. I really enjoyed PE and sports when I was at school and that, combined with my new-found enthusiasm for exercise, meant choosing a course was a no-brainer. I’ve always had an interest in sports anatomy and physiology so when I read about what the Access to Sports Therapy and Fitness course involved, I knew it was the right choice for me.
Getting back into education was a little bit terrifying, my confidence was low and the thought of having to do course work and assessments made me quite nervous. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to adjust to being back in a learning environment but I soon got into the swing of things again. There’s a real mix of people on my course; people who are at different stages in their life. It’s a really accommodating environment and I’d recommend it to anyone who might be looking to invest in themselves but are too nervous to do it.
The course is really interesting and if you’re willing to read and put the work in it’s definitely not as scary as I anticipated it would be. The lecturers are all really good and the wide-variety of modules keeps it interesting. After I finish my course, I’d like to progress onto university and eventually work in podiatry or physiotherapy. I’m interested in cycling so working in a cycling team would be my ideal job.
I’m glad I decided to return to education when I did, they say whisky gets better with age and I’d argue that education does too.”
